Situation report from a Holding Centre at Umueri General Hospital, has shown that the displaced persons at the centre have good accommodation, functional toilets but no food and portable water.

At the camp, a few of the displaced were seen at the centre as some were said to have gone out in search of food and good drinking water.

Speaking to newsmen, Hycienth Nwanegbo, one of the displaced, from Umueze Anam said that some others left in search of food.

“I am Hycienth Nwanegbo, from Umueze Anam, Anambra West LGA. We arrived here on Sept. 24 for refuge, where we were displaced by floodwaters that destroyed all our crops and belongings.

“Some of us were given two mattresses by SEMA operatives, but until this moment, no food, no water.’’

According to him, some have merely been feeding only on bread with no money.

He added: “some of us, who cannot cope with hunger, have been appealing to government to assist by providing food and good drinking water.

“We have good accommodation here, everything is in place including toilet facilities and mattresses but we need food and good drinking water,” he said.

In reaction to the complaint, Sylvester Oriji Okafor, the Transition Committee chairman, Anambra West LGA, who spoke via telephone said that he was on his way to the centre.

He, however, said that he and his team would do everything possible to ensure that they would be fed from Sept. 26.

Okafor re-assured that everything would be ready for the people and therefore appealed for their patience.

It was observed that the facilities at the centre were in good condition. They have enough accommodation with enough mattresses and blankets and good toilet facilities too.
