GOVERNOR Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state says his administration is committed to establishment of a modern archive centre for proper preservation of government documentations.

Akeredolu made this known when declaring open a one-day sensitisation programme on “Archive and Records Management“, in Ilara-Mokin, near Akure on Friday.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Agboola Ajayi, said in spite of its importance to governance, successive governments had not done much to put in a befitting archive for the state.

“A state government is expected to have a repository where documents of government, archival records such as minutes, resolutions and ordinances that form the legal basis for government existence are stored.

“They are constantly relevant, studied, cited and used as basis for policy development. A state archive is a potent way of promoting government accountability and good governance,” he said.

Akeredolu expressed hope that the programme would help to midwife a befitting archive centre where the common heritage of the state would be preserved for posterity.

In an address of welcome, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Yemi Olowolabi, lauded the governor for showing interest in the project which he noted past governments had attempted but without completion.

Olowolabi also applauded the doggedness of the management and staff of the Archive Department for not relenting in their efforts to establish archive centre, despite all challenges.

A renowned archivist and President, National Association of Archivists, Prof. Bunmi Alegbeleye and other resource persons are expected to deliver lectures at the event. (NAN)
