THE Ondo State Government, has started local production of science subject materials to address inadequacy of science equipment in the state public schools.

Mr Femi Agagu, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, who visited the workshop of the Ondo State Science Equipment Centre, Akure on Tuesday, expressed satisfaction with the materials produced and ready for distribution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the materials locally produced are: potentiometer, setsquare, tripod stand and protractor.

Agagu noted that the initiative was in furtherance to the avowed commitment of the state government to the development of the education sector through the provision of modern science equipment.

The commissioner said he was at the centre in order to see for himself what the centre was able to produce as the school resumption for a new session was just a few weeks away.

The commissioner, who thanked the staff of the centre for the efforts, said the government investment at the centre was not a waste considering what they had produced.

According to him, the equipment will be distributed to public schools on resumption.

He admonished students, who would be the end users to make judicious use of the equipment when eventually distributed.

Agagu , who also visited Ondo State Skill Acquisition Centre, Akure, promised that the government would strive to make the centres an internally generated revenue source for the state.

NAN reports that school cardigans, socks, and mufflers are being produced in the centre.

He, therefore, enjoined youths in the state to take advantages of the centre to learn skills that would not only make them self reliant but employers of labour.

In her address, Oluwatoun Akinkuolie, the Director, Ondo State Science Equipment Centre, thanked the state governor and the commissioner for the financial encouragement the centre had received from the government.

Akinkuolie said the products from the centre were of best qualities, compared to imported ones, noting that the cost of producing them locally was cheaper than the cost of importation.

Similarly, Mrs Oluremi Aremo, the Director, Skill Acquisition Centre, said the centre was open to young men and ladies to learn skills that would better their lives.

Aremo said the cardigans would be sold to the state Unity Schools at a very affordable price, saying that the centre was planning to embark on a large scale production for sale to other schools in the state.

The commissioner was accompanied to the centres by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Akinkugbe Asaniyan. (NAN)
