Poor reading culture among students, youths worries Lagos council boss

A local government chairman in Lagos State has urged youths and students to take advantage of the ultra-modern library and the ICT centre provided by the administration to improve on their reading culture.

The Chairman, Ifako-Ijaiye Council Area, Mr Oloruntoba Oke, who expressed worry about the poor reading culture among youths, said education remained the greatest empowerment.

Oke spoke on Thursday at the 2018 Spelling Bee Competition organised by the council.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Spelling Bee, a pet project of former First Lady of Lagos State, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, was inaugurated in 2000.

Winners of the competition are accorded recognition by the state government as they are appointed as “One-Day Governor” with others as members of his cabinet.

“The competition among primary and secondary schools in the state has become a flagship event in the school calendar.

“It is also a source of inspiration for school children to aspire to excel not just in English Language but in their academics generally,” the council boss, represented by his wife, Pastor Modupe Oke, said.

He lauded the initiator of the project, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, and asked students to participate fully in the competition.

He promised that the council would soon begin massive renovation of primary schools in the area and also provide education materials.

Mr Babajide Atala, the council’s Supervisor for Education, urged students to always study and prepare to excel in their academics.

NAN reports that 16 primary schools and 10 secondary schools participated in the Spelling Bee competition in the area.

Master Samual Makinde of Iju Station Primary School 1, clinched first position, Miss Michelle Ukwandu-China of African Church Primary School came second, while Oluwadamilare Adeyemi of FACM Primary School 1, placed third in the primary schools category.

In the secondary school category, Master Abeeb Ayansola of Ifako-Ijaiye Senior High School came first, while Master Ramon Yusuf of Sonmori Comprehensive High School, won the second position.

Miss Precious Emmaku of Keke Senior High School, Ijaye, took the third position. (NAN)
