Power Failure: Expert calls for creation of solar farms

ABDULRAZAK Ibrahim, an electrical engineer, has called on the various state governments to create solar farms to complement electricity generation, and serve as alternative power supply.
Ibrahim, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jos, defined
a solar farm as the collection of solar arrays on a piece of land that produces power derived from the sun’s energy.
According to him, solar farms are built to provide enough electricity to power many businesses and households.
“Solar farms supply power to electrical grids similar to fossil-fuel energy plants that can be managed by various states.
“The main difference between the two is that solar farms do not produce pollution during operation, and they are renewable energy sources.,” he said.
He said the two types of solar farms were
community solar farms and utility-scale solar farms.
Ibrahim, stated that the major difference between these two solar farms was that they had two different customer base.
He explained that public utilities were the main beneficiaries of utility-scale solar farms, while community solar farms targetted end-consumers such as tenants and homeowners.
Ibrahim said the advantages of solar energy far outweighed the disadvantages when erected properly.
According to him, some of the advantages of solar energy are that they are environmentally friendly, as solar farms usually collect energy from the sun and feeds it to regional power grids for public utilities.
He further listed others as; low maintenance: because the battery units could last 30 years and only needed
semi-yearly cleaning.
He, however, stated that one of the major disadvantages of solar farms was being capital intensive due the high cost of installation.
Ibrahim also pointed out that rainy and cloudy days would reduce the amount of energy from the solar panels. (NAN)
