Aguta Local Government Area of Anambra State has criminalise the practice of open defecation

ECHE Ezeibe, Transition Committee chairman, Aguata Local Government Area, LGA, has said that open defecation practice will henceforth be considered as an offence.

“The ugly practice will have to stop forthwith and perpetrators of such nuisance acts will no longer be tolerated anymore, ‘’ Ezeibe said during a two-day sensitisation workshop aimed at achieving open defecation-Free, ODF, practice in all communities of Aguata LGA.

The chairman was represented at the event by Jaja Nwankwo, council’s head of Local Government Administration, HLGA.

He enlightened participants on dangers of ODF while pledging his support and commitment toward achieving open defecation free practice in the remaining communities in the LGA.

Igwe Emmanuel Onyeneke of Ekwulobia, while pledging his commitment toward achieving ODF in Aguata, called on the state government to construct toilets and water facility in government-owned institutions in the area.

Clement Chigbo, Anambra State UNICEF consultant, added that the workshop was aimed at sensitising key actors in institutions and public places on the need to get local governments to achieve ODF status.

Douglas Mba, permanent secretary, Ministry of ublic Utilities, commended the participants for their support, dedication and commitment.

He urged them to enlighten their people on dangers of open defecation as well as other things they learnt during the training.

Peter Akwobi, coordinator, Aguata WASH, noted that 199 communities out of 224 communities in Aguata LGA have been certified Open Defecation Free, ODF.

“UNICEF has helped us to build our human capacity in many aspects such as personal and interpersonal skills, human capacity development, ICT, record keeping and community mobilisation.

“With the support of UNICEF, traditional rulers, president-generals, PGs, institutions and other stakeholders, we hope to attain same feat in the 25 communities in Aguata,’’ Akwobi said.

Chineze George-Ileka, UNICEF desk officer in the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, urged the participant to ensure that Aguata and Anambra State in general attain ODF.

George-Ileka said that such responsibility should not be left to communities alone.

Water Sanitation and Hygiene began its activities in Aguata since 2006. The first phase of its programme ended in 2012, while the second phase had been ongoing.

The workshop involved a number of presentations and overview of sanitation in the LGAs and an action plan drawn for follow up at ward levels.

It was organised by Aguata Water Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, in collaboration with UNICEF and Anambra State, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency.
