Coronavirus Pandemic
THE Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) has called for collective efforts of relevant stakeholders at checking the spread of COVID-19 virus.
The organisation also notes that addressing all issues that could limit obligations to protect, promote and fulfill human rights of people amid the pandemic, is cardinal to fighting the virus.
The Executive Director of the organisation, Dr. Uju Agomoh, made the call in a statement on Friday in Abuja to commemorate the Human Rights Day observed on every Dec. 10.
Agomoh said that the theme of the day: “Recover Better, Stand up for Human Rights, clearly speaks to the fears, anxiety and concerns the threat of COVID-19 put all through”.
She said that the theme was more apt by coming with a message of hope in a time of global uncertainty about the pandemic.
She also said that government at a levels should address all the issues that created imbalance in the protection of the rights of everyone.
She observed further that abuse of rights could impact negatively more on those on the lower social strata of the society.
“The pandemic has impacted on us all negatively, but the disproportionate impact on the poor and vulnerable population has been most glaring and damaging.
“This reminds us that we need to do more to promote and protect the rights of all persons regardless of age, creed, status, language, colour and preferences.
“In Nigeria, the pandemic exposed inequality that demeans and dehumanises a larger percentage of the population of our country.
“This reality calls for serious attention to all facets of governance and the need for engaging in law- making and enforcement with human face,” she said.
Agomoh noted that the situation called for sincere and committed efforts to obligations of governance, emphasising the need for government to provide equal opportunities for all persons to fulfill their aspirations and attain economic prosperity.
She noted that time had come to reflect deeply around the operations of Nigerian security and justice sector.
“It is a time to use research and documentation of data to address key social and developmental issues in the country.
“It is a time for the human rights community to come together in synergy to address a number of challenges in our criminal justice system,”” she said.(
