THE price of crayfish has dropped by 50 per cent in major markets in Enugu metropolis, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
A market survey conducted by NAN in Enugu on Friday showed that the price had dropped due to the decrease of water level in the rivers and decrease of rainfall.
Mrs Agatha Chukwu, a Crayfish dealer at Ogbete Main Market, said that the price of the product gradually comes down as rainfall subsides.
Chukwu said that the river was always high during rainy season which makes it difficult for the fishermen to get the product.
She said that the lesser the water in the rivers, the more crayfish to be collected, thereby making the price to drop.
Another dealer, Mr Uche Onyeabor, at Akwata market, said that a 50kg bag is now sold at between N45,000 and N47,000 depending on the specie, as against N90,000 and N95,000 sold from May to middle of August.
Onyeabor said that 4.5 litre painter bucket of crayfish is now sold between N1, 700 and N1, 500 depending on the specie, as against N3,800 and N4,000.
He said that there were two species of Crayfish sold in the markets; the one of Oron, from Akwa Ibom State and the one gotten from Lagos.
The dealer said that the price would continue to reduce as long as the level of rainfall continues to drop.
A buyer at Garki market, along Agbani Road, Mrs Ifeoma Orabueze, said she bought a big bag of crayfish for N95,000 in July, but the same bag was now sold at N47,000.
Orabueze said she was surprised to see that the price had significantly dropped by 50 per cent within a space of one month.
”It is a surprise to me that the price of Crayfish that was almost N100, 000 has suddenly dropped to N47, 000,” she said.
Another buyer at Mayo market, Mrs. Felicia Ifenna, expressed happiness over the fall in price of the product.
Ifenna said with the current price, many would be able to afford it, irrespective of their financial status, as it was being sold for prices that could be as low as N50, to any amount one wishes to buy.(NAN)
