AN educationist, Mr Yomi Otubela, has advised the Federal Government to prioritise the training and welfare of teachers as a way of boosting the country’s education system.
Otubela, who is the Deputy National President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
He said that as the “drivers“ of the education sector teachers deserved to be well catered for to enable them give their best.
“Education is vital to national development, and teachers are its immutable drivers, and an appreciation of this reality should compel national action to change their lot for the better.
“The quality of teachers is a major factor that should be taken seriously for the education sector to be reinvigorated,” he said.
Otubela suggested that government and private schools owners should cooperate to ensure that a high standard of teaching is achieved in Nigerian schools.
“States and private school owners need to create ingenious ways of boosting the morale of their teachers to for greater efficiency.
“This should include training and retraining for effective classroom activities, as well as improved welfare and motivation.”
Otubela also advised examination bodies to make efforts to eradicate examination malpractices, during external examination to improve the quality of our academic certificates.
“Examination bodies in the country should find ways of tackling rampant cases of examination malpractices in the country.
“The deployment of information technology should be able to reduce this problem to its barest minimum, it will go a long way to improve the quality of our academic certificates.”(NAN)
