THE Nigerian Pro-Wrestling Federation said on Friday that it had concluded arrangements to stage the maiden Battleground Wrestling Championship in April.

Its president, Chief John Uche, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the event would be launched in Abuja on March 13.

Uche said the championship, which would begin properly from April 10 and end on May 1, would be staged in six states.

The states are Lagos, Delta, Kano, Ebonyi, Imo and Akwa Ibom.

He said: “our forthcoming pro-wrestling fight against corruption tagged ’’Battleground 2021’’ will be unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Preparation for the championship is on top gear to ensure a hitch-free event across the states where the championship will hold.

“We have put measures in place to ensure strict adherence to all the COVID-19 safety protocols.

“The Federation will serve as a change agent for many of our restive youths because we already have plans to engage them in our activities to aid sports development.’’

The president said wrestlers would compete in more than10 categories at the event.

Uche added that plans were also on to build an academy for youths to regularly engage in the sport.

A wrestler, Vincent Dimanozie, popularly known as “Iron Bone’’ said wrestlers were already training to participate in the national event.

“My co-wrestlers and I are battle-ready for this national competition coming up in April,’’ he said.

NAN reports that wrestlers like Mighty Man, Flying Dan, Mr Sharpman, Power Vic, Zion Lion, De Squeezer, Rocky Johnson, Tina Terror, Lady Bunmi and others will participate in the event.
