A 19-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to a 9-month probation on Wednesday for sending death threats to French footballer Neal Maupay, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion in England.

Derek Ng De Ren, who was convicted last month, had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment relating to messages sent via anonymous Instagram accounts a year ago.

These included telling the footballer his family “will be attacked later in the day, just watch.”

Deputy Public Prosecutor Jeremy Bin said Maupay took the teenager’s threats to be legitimate and credible.

“The victim and his family did not leave their home as far as possible, for fear of being attacked.”

The messages were sent after Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was injured by Maupay after a tackle during an English Premier League (EPL) match last June.

The league investigated the messages before filing a police report in Singapore in August.

De Ren’s sentence includes a nightly curfew and 40 hours of community service.

His mother paid a bond of 5,000 Singapore dollars (3,700 dollars, about N1.85 million).(dpa/NAN)
