Agriculture
THOMAS Muopshin, Project Coordinator, Plateau Potato Value Chain Support Project, says the project has provided 26 mini dams, 17 spring captures to boost potatoes dry season farming in the state.
Muopshin disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday.
He said that the dams and the spring captures would enable potato farmers to cultivate their products throughout the year.
“We were supposed to have two mini dams in each of the 17 local government areas of the state but after conducting a feasibility study we ended up with 26 of them.
“We also have 17 spring captures which is a new technology where water springs are captured and diverted into a reservoir for irrigation during dry season, “he said.
The project coordinator stated that the infrastructure for irrigation would be managed by women, for proper maintenance and sustained usage.
He said that the World Bank which funds the project insisted that the facilities be managed by women.
He added that farmers were now converting land meant for other produce to potatoes farms as a result of the water infrastructure provided.
