SEN. Michael Bamidele, Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, says the proposed Federal University Ayin Ekiti, Ekiti State will help transform Nigeria’s health sector.
Bamidele said this on Tuesday at plenary during the second reading of the bill for the establishment of the University.
The lawmaker who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District sponsored the bill.
Presenting the lead debate on the general principles of the bill, Bamidele said the passage of the bill would help in transforming the health and education sectors of the country.
According to him, this will assist in producing the desired medical manpower and expertise that Nigeria yearned for.
The lawmaker said that the bill scaled its first reading on Feb. 24.
He said the proposed legislation sought to establish the university and make comprehensive provisions for its due management and administration.
He said the university would deliver education and training to current and future employees in the medical profession.
“The goal of the university is to inspire and motivate students and medical personnel about the value of being health professionals so as to lead change for realizing a more sustainable health sector that serves a more sustainable world.
“The very essence of this bill is to provide a highly specialized institution that is more productive and very much needed for medical advancement of this nation.”
Bamidele said that the nation’s health sector had very high potential, saying that the sector also required high-level technical, scientific, and administrative skills to drive it.
“The university is, therefore, to further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique innovations in the health sector.
“The university is, therefore, to further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique innovations, entrepreneurship, and wealth management in its core area of interest,” he said.
President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan thereafter referred the bill to the Committee on Health for further legislative action to report back in four weeks. (NAN)
