Protest: Community leader harps on dialogue

A Yoruba community leader in Sokoto State, Chief James Olorunfemi, has advocated for dialogue instead of the planned protest by some youths across Nigeria.
Olorunfemi made the call in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Sokoto.
He described the proposed nationwide protest as unnecessary in recognition of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilise the economy.
”We understand the grievances and acknowledge the concerns which is the driving force for the planned protest.
”The economic situation affects everyone, however, we appeal to the public to give the present administration a chance to continue the process of economic recovery.
“Labour union and trade union have a reason for accepting N70,000 as minimum wage, one of such is the promise to continue reviewing it every three years, ” he said.
He noted that citizens have the constitutional rights to peaceful protest, stressing the need for understanding the motives behind it, “because some individuals or group might highjack it and mobilise for unruly behaviors that may lead to something else.
“The situation need careful consideration based on indicators that unscrupulous elements may hijack the planned protest for violent purposes,’’ he said.
He further warned against the repeat of EndSars protest which had crippled activities in the country, particularly in Lagos.
“EndSars protest should be a source of reminder to all Nigerians, what a protest of this nature can cause and the possibilities of things being hijacked by disgruntle actors to cause mayhem.
“Unity and peaceful coexistence among all strata of the society should be paramount, ‘ he advised.
He emphasised the need for continues dialogue and urged parties to work towards peaceful resolution, shun violence and prioritise national unity to facilitate progress, peace and development. (NAN)
