A socio-political group, Ojo Ola Oyo, has appealed to youths in Oyo State to desist from participating in any ‘fruitless protest’.

Founder of the group, Alhaji Kehinde Olaosebikan, made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.

Olaosebikan, a former local government chairman in the state, urged the youth to look at the current youth-focused moves of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration and key in order to benefiting from them.

He urged the youth in the country to take cognisance of the verifiable moves made so far by the Federal Government to secure their future.

“At least, they are aware of the students’ loan scheme of which is at no interest and doesn’t only cover theoretical academic pursuits, but also the area of vocational training.

“You can also see how government has been clearing the rot in the nation’s social security programme and ensuring that what is meant to assist the most vulnerable among us gets to them.

“While it is the inalienable right of the citizens to hold peaceful protests, we must know that oftentimes, fifth columnists will wait in the wings to hijack such protests and throw the society into more damning chaos.

“This is why we are appealing to our youths that rather than risk a protest that may end up with everyone licking wounds, we should engage the government in discussions that will open its eyes to more areas of our needs.

“Nigeria is the only place we can call our own. Those who will spur us into actions that will destroy our common patrimony have the means of bolting when the chips are down, which most of us don’t have,” Olaosebikan said.

He said that the group was working with others on how the youth in the state would be abreast of information on government policies targetted at them, but which many were unaware of.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that palpable fear has gripped the nation over the threat of a nationwide protest, scheduled to begin from Aug. 1 over the present economic condition in the country.

While a section of the political class has been saying that there would be no going back on the planned protest, others have been calling for caution, citing the debilitating effects of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests on the country. (NAN)
