The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has mandated telecoms service providers to make available opt in/opt out short codes for all their promotions.

This, NCC said, will give the consumers window of choice and power to decide what they prefer at any moment.

The move is the regulatory body’s response to growing allegations of imposition of subscriptions by the service providers on consumers with cost implications.

It is even more frustrating, according to some consumers, that many of these unsolicited subscriptions have no ways to be undone.

NCC wrote on its twitter handle:  “Service providers are mandated by the NCC to provide an opt in/ opt out short codes for all their promotions, giving the consumer a window of choice and the power to decide what he/she prefers at any moment.”
