THE Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Abade-Toru Manga Community Development Initiative have adopted Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in a matter before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions.

The Head of Public Relations of NIMASA, Mr Edward Osagie, said this in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday.

Osagie said the committee was investigating a petition brought against NIMASA by the community alleging its (agency’s) failure to establish skills acquisition projects for them as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

He said that when the matter was called up on Wednesday both parties agreed to seek peaceful settlement through ADR.

He said the Chairman of the committee, Mr Mike Etaba, said the NIMASA team led by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Isichei Osamgbi, had earlier reached out to them.

“NIMASA had requested that we resolve the matter through ADR; the move was well appreciated and encouraged by the Public Petitions Committee.

“The NIMASA team and the committee met before the sitting, and agreed that the matter be handled through ADR for proper implementation.

“We encourage ADR and if parties agree with ADR they will go for it,” Osagie quoted Etaba as saying.

Osagie said Etaba also expressed delight over the harmonious agreement between both parties, adding  “there is nothing like harmony.”

George Noah, the Chairman of Abade-Toru Manga Community Development Initiative, also expressed satisfaction with the resolution.

He said the agreement showed that the community was no longer at loggerheads with NIMASA.

“I am very much satisfied with the resolution since it is in line with the plea by NIMASA.

“We are not antagonising the agency,” Noah said.

He assured of peaceful coexistence between the community and the agency going forward.

Noah also gave the assurance that activities of sea pirates that had affected the Niger Delta region and the Gulf of Guinea would be mitigated. (NAN)
