An earthquake shook large parts of western Greece early on Thursday.

The quake was felt mainly on the holiday islands in the Ionian Sea such as Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Ithaca, as well as on the west coast of the Peloponnese Peninsula.

According to the Institute of Geodynamics, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and was located at a depth of about 10 kilometres below the seabed, west of the island of Zakynthos.

“We have no information about casualties or damage so far,’’ said Giorgos Katsivelis, the mayor of the town of Lixouri on Cephalonia, according to Greek media.

A tectonic plate boundary runs under the Ionian Sea, where the African and European plates meet.

The friction between these plates often generates strong quakes. (dpa/NAN)
