Realnews celebrates its fifth anniversary on Thursday, November 16, 2017. Below is what Nigerians think of the online publication which thrives on business and economy, oil and gas, politics, environment, women and children. Excerpts:
General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), former chief of defence staff and chief of army staff – Realnews is an online magazine and it has done a lot. I hope, especially now that this country is moving towards technology, that more and more people will not have time to be carrying newspapers like me. Online is the best way to go and I think Realnews is already on the right track. I’m being futuristic, in the next five years, I’m sure Realnews will be where everybody will be converging to.
Ray Ekpu, managing director, MayFive and former chief executive officer, Newswatch Communications Limited – I’m very impressed. Maureen has shown tenacity. She published a book two years ago, which was a compilation of some of the stories published in Realnews. That means that she is doing it differently from all the other online publications. And the fact that she brought this crowd here shows the quality in her and that shows leadership. She has shown leadership and that has reflected on the quality of the magazine and publications.
Barry Esimone, chief executive officer, Lloyds Energy Limited – Realnews has come of age. In less than five years it has made a mark. I may be the wrong person to make this comment because I’m totally biased towards Realnews because of personal torch they have given to issues I know about. But be that as it may, on a very serious note, I can tell you that Realnews is one of the outstanding news organisations that stand for thorough investigative journalism. I’m a living witness to that and they have also resisted influence from people who are supposed to make news but have negative attitude towards news making. They have resisted such influence so I can’t but recommend Realnews and hope that Realnews will grow from strength to strength. I can tell you that the end of Realnews is not in sight.
Sola Adebawo, Communications Manager, Chevron Nigeria Limited – Realnews has established itself as a leader in investigative reporting and balanced reporting in the Nigerian journalism landscape. There is no time in the history of journalism in this country when organisations like Realnews is so needed like now. Their reports are always balanced and with a lot of depth. There are too much superficiality going on in this era of social media, where citizen journalism has replaced well-trained professionals. Realnews is one of the platform that will continue to keep hope alive because it always goes for well-balanced and properly delivered reportage of key issues both in business and politics. I would like to encourage Realnews to continue to go ahead and want to congratulate her on the fifth anniversary lecture. This lecture has become a major contribution to national development and we will continue to support Realnews. Realnews annual lecture has always been a platform to discuss topical issues and emerging trends. We value your role in setting the agenda for public discuss and moulding public opinion on variety of critical issues.
Ogechukwu Udeagha, Manager, Media, Mobil Producing Nigeria Limited – Realnews is one of the most respected online publications in this country run by professionals. They are not individuals who don’t have the prerequisite training, so Realnews is a properly run place devoted to thorough investigative journalism. We totally respect what they do and we will keep supporting them.
Victor Anyaegbudike, coordinator, external communications, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited – Realnews has separated itself as a fundamental platform for investigative journalism. The quality of news products that are coming out on that platform has been significant and wonderful. It is an eye opener to modern journalism and the professionalism is there and the zeal is there. The articulation of ideas is there and I believe that Realnews will go places and a time will come when you think of international and national platform of investigative journalism Realnews will be one of those to reckon with globally. So that is my vision for Realnews and for five years you have distinguish yourself in different aspect of reporting. The calibre of people who came here today has shown that Realnews is well accepted from all walks of life.
Gboyega Bello, manager, Media, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC – I have known Realnews Magazine for quite a long time, and I have known the publisher, Maureen Chigbo for a long time, since her days at Newswatch. If you listen to the speech of our GMD, you will realize that the NNPC is pleased with the oil and gas stories Realnews Magazine publishes, and I am also happy with other stories there. They should keep the good work going.
Ishaya Ibrahim, a journalist – Realnews Magazine is the first online magazine that deals specifically with investigative journalism. It is one paper that gives in-depth discussions about issues, and this has been the major strength of the paper over and above others. It is commendable.
Paul Ejime, international media and communications consultant – Realnews Magazine is a product of hard work and professionalism. The story of Realnews is a story of tenacity of purpose, knowing your vision, where you are going and how to get there. I enjoy the fact that I get balanced and authentic stories from Realnews Magazine. I am also pleased with the fact that Realnews Magazine not only concentrates on the ruling class and big personalities in the country, but also reports stories from the common man on the street, giving them a voice.
Segun Adeleye, publisher of WorldStage News – Realnews Magazine is a well-managed media outfit. It is a focused and consistent magazine, and that is why the high and mighty associates with it. I therefore encourageRealnews to keep up the good work they are doing, so that the future will remain brighter and so that the visions for the organisation and their plans for the country as a whole will be realised.
Maikanti Baru, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC – I am delighted to be part of this year’s Realnews Magazine Online Annual Lecture which holds today in Lagos. Your online medium may be only five years old, however, the impact, I reckon, it’s been making in the newspaper industry is phenomenal. I regard your reportage as responsible, balanced, fair, credible and well researched, underscoring, I suppose, your attraction to readers. I can only urge you to maintain your high standard as this will continue to open door for you in high places, locally and internationally.
