AN Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Idowu Obafemi, has called on the leaders of the two predominant religions in the country to intensify preaching to discourage divorce.

Obafemi, who made the call in Ilorin on Wednesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), expressed dismay that divorce had been on the increase among couples.

Obafemi also appealed to the religious leaders to always counsel couples on the need to remain married because of the future of their children.

The lawyer said religious leaders had a role to play in reducing the rate of divorce and protect marriage and the family.

“Both Pastors and Imams must preach against this act.

‘’There is need for them to do more by advising couples to try hard to rescue their marriage and not see divorce as the best solution.

“The campaign against divorce must start from religious houses before others join. Clerics must re-orientate prospective couples to see divorce as the least option to settle matrimonial crisis.

“Journalists must write against divorce, parents must advise their yet to marry children and lawyers must not encourage their clients when they seek for advice,” he said.

Obafemi, however, advised married couples to endure with their partner, stressing that ‘’marriage is full of challenges.’’

“Don’t expect perfection from anybody. You cannot expect a smooth marriage without challenges. Learn to cope and tolerate your partner and be prayerful.” (NAN)
