Removal of illegal structures, shanties to commence on August 1

SOME relevant government agencies will on August 1, commence removal of illegal structures and shanties located at unauthorised sites in Onitsha Area of Anambra State.

A statement released by C. Don Adinuba, Anambra commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment said there would not be any going back on Aug. 1 deadline for the removal exercise.

This is following on the expiration of notices already served on all such illegal occupants to quit before the expiration of the given grace periods allowed by the government of Anambra State.

“Government has through the Ministry of Lands and the Anambra State Physical Planning Board served relevant notices to all such illegal trespassers on Government property on certain layouts.

“Some of the shanties are located at the Marine and the Onitsha Prisons areas of the commercial city.’’

According to him, the exercise is being undertaken to provide physical improvements in the environment as well as facelift to the city in line with all extant laws.

“All residents and occupants of government lands in some layouts are also required to revalidate their hold on lands.

“The exercise is aimed at ascertaining the genuine plot owners and to determine the current status of every allottee.

“It is also to ensure that genuine plot owners receive the new digital Certificate of Occupancy, C of O, that will give their property `absolute legitimacy’.’’

He said further: “the exercise is not aimed at witch-hunting anybody or institution but set out to ensure improvements on aesthetics of the state in line with a vision of making the state a safe Haven and an investment destination.’’
