Rep calls for robust oversight function on security agencies

REP. Denis Idahosa, (APC-Edo), representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has called for a robust oversight function of the National Assembly to address insecurity.
The lawmaker also lamented the pervading insecurity in the country in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.
He said the situation was hampering foreign direct investment and worsening poverty in the country.
He, therefore, canvassed for the National Assembly to come up with a robust oversight over security agencies in the country.
He explained that the oversight would ensure that security agencies do their jobs effectively.
He added that this had become imperative as it was obvious that monies being released for security were not judiciously utilised.
”If NASS will do 50 per cent of its job, I think Nigerians will experience 50 per cent security in terms of what we expect.
“Insecurity is a major issue in the country which trickles down to several other challenges, such as lack of job creation, because a country not secured can not attract foreign investors.”
He noted that security is a collective responsibility of all, adding that certain regions in the country had enslaved their people, rather than educating them.
“We are only seeing a little of what is to come if we don’t do the right thing, because when you don’t educate your people, over time they will become rebels, and that is what we are experiencing today.
“So, there is need for these regions to start educating their people, otherwise insecurity has come to stay,” he said. (NAN)
