THE House of Representatives on Wednesday, urged the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to investigate report of attempted rape and assault of school girls in Abia.
The House condemned the brutal attack on the girls, who are students of Methodist Girls Model Secondary School, Ovim, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, on May 25.
This followed a motion by Rep. Nkeiruka Onyejiocha (PDP-Abia), who informed the House of the incident and stressed the need to guarantee safety in schools across the country.
She expressed regret that the girl-child had become a target of various forms of assault, attacks and abduction by terrorist groups and other criminal gangs.
Onyejiocha recalled the incidents of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno; Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe; Turkish International School, Isheri, Ogun and Babington Macaulay Junior Secondary School, Ikorodu, Lagos.
She added that most recently, was the abduction of student at Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi,Yobe.
“The hoodlums invaded the school dormitory at about 2 a.m. and demanded that all the girls stripped in a bid to gang-rape them.
“The brave ones among them refused to succumb to the hoodlums’ demand which led to the brutal assault on them with cutlasses, iron rods and other dangerous weapons.”
Onyejiocha expressed worry that no fewer than 15 innocent girls who ought to be at school ended up in the hospital with various degrees of injuries.
According to her, the attack depicts the degree of evil among individuals and depth of moral decadence that pervades the society today.
“The increasing rate of assault, attacks and abduction of school children, especially the girl-child in the country may not only result in psychological trauma for victims but possesses capacity to negatively affect their educational development,” Onyejiocha said.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, put it to a voice vote.
The House, therefore, called on NAPTIP to carry out investigation on the matter. (NAN)
