Irate residents of Ede in Osun State have lynched a level 2 Higher National Diploma student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede after he crushed an admission seeker to death.
The undergraduate is popularly known as Fish.
There have been various accounts of the number of lives lost in the accident which happened at Ita Oloki in Ede.
While residents claimed that four persons were crushed to death and the driver lynched, the police said the undergraduate crushed one person to death and he was killed by the angry mob.
Apart from the admission seeker, our correspondent gathered that the speeding driver also crushed a telephone repairer identified as Waliu and one other person to death.
Fish, who our correspondent gathered was lynched by the irate youths of the town was said to be speeding to avoid being arrested by some security operatives after he had earlier crushed a woman in purdah to death at Olowo-Bida area.
The undergraduate, who was said to be a student of Building Technology in the polytechnic was reportedly beaten to death by the irate residents at the scene who saw the mangled bodies of people they saw some moments earlier.
A resident who identified himself as Sule told our correspondent that Fish rammed into the admission seeker who was walking along the road with the hope of picking a bike home after she had written the Post UTME exams at the Polytechnic.
Waliu and one other person were said to be riding on a motorcycle when the speeding car rammed into them and flung them into a ditch.
Although the accident happened at around 6pm on Monday, our correspondent who visited the scene on Tuesday saw blood stains on the wall of a building close to the scene.
The Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Sola Lawal, when contacted by our correspondent on the telephone said he would make some clarifications and get back to our correspondent.
The Assistant Commander, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in charge of Osun West, Mr. Hussein Sanusi, when contacted told our correspondent that he was informed that three persons died in the accident.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Osun State, Mr. Peter Oke, who also confirmed the accident said the driver crushed to death a bike man and a female passenger.
He said, ” The accident involved a Toyota Camry whose driver was said to have hit a motorcyclist and a girl. The two of them died and the driver was also said to have been killed by the people.”
But the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, told our correspondent that the accident claimed one life and the angry mob lynched the driver of the vehicle.
He said, ” One person died in the accident. The accident involved a car and a motorcycle and people took the law into their own hands and killed the poor boy. That is barbaric.
“Efforts are being intensified to arrest the perpetrators. It was an accident, it was not intentional and that is why it is called an accident. Except they can establish that the boy drove intentionally to kill. It is barbaric and people should desist from such acts. We sympathise with the family of the person that died in the accident.” – Punch
