Review of 1999 Constitution panacea to indivisible Nigeria – Osun Speaker
General News
MR Timothy Owoeye, the Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, has called for a review of the 1999 constitution and proactive restructuring of Nigeria for the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic groups in the country.
Owoeye made the call when the management of the National Institute for Policy Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos paid a courtesy visit to the Osun Assembly in Osogbo, on Wednesday.
The speaker, who identified tribalism and corruption as the bane of policy implementation in Nigeria, equally condemned the level of nepotism among political office holders and the public at large.
According to him, the two scourges had set back the growth of the country.
He called for the inclusion of people at the grassroots in policy formulation from conception to implementation, noting that implementers of the policies are often not sincere in its execution.
“The current state of our nation is not what our founding fathers envisioned and we must collectively come together to address the ills bedeviling us.
“For us as legislators, we have dedicated ourselves to nation-building through the quality of our legislation and legislative duties.
“Osun Assembly was also fully represented at the constitution review in Akure because we believe in the urgent need to review our guiding principle, the 1999 constitution.
“it is time for us to be proactive and not reactive, we must listen to the yearnings of the citizenry and quickly proffer solutions rather than leaving it to fester and snowball into a fully-fledged crisis,” Allege said.
Some of the lawmakers at the meeting urged everyone to eschew politics of bitterness, community conflict, and corruption for a better society.
They tasked the federal governments with the proper implementation of policies in relation to security, education, economy, and electoral policies as well as the independence of each arm of government.
Earlier, the leader of the NIPSS team and Acting Director of Studies, Dr. Nasirudeen Usman, said the objective of the tour was to look into challenges facing policy implementation in the country.
Usman said, “The major concerns of the team is about policy implementation in the country as a part of our ten years development plan for the country”
He commended the state government, under the leadership of Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, on developmental policy implementation in Osun and solicited for the support of stakeholders to make policy implementation achievable. (NAN)
