THE National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to revisit the Nigeria Air project which had been suspended.

The association made the call on Thursday, at its aviation stakeholders’ safety workshop, held in Lagos.

The President of NAAPE, Mr Abednego Galadima, while congratulating the president on his re-election for a second term, said he should focus on actualising projects captured in the Aviation Roadmap.

“I wish to use this opportunity to call on him to use this term to actualise the realisation of second Abuja runway project, Nigeria Air and other laudable projects as contained in the Aviation Roadmap document,” he said.

According to Galadima, for over three decades, the association has been firm in its advocacy for the rights, privileges and welfare of Nigerian pilots and aircraft engineers on one hand, and enduring professionalism and professional excellence on the other, while promoting safety in the aviation industry.

The Commissioner, Accident Investigation Bureau, Mr Akin Olateru, said there was a need for all stakeholders in the industry to continue to promote safety.

He said, “I implore all pilots, engineers and stakeholders to note that safety is not a one man’s business. We all need to play our part to ensure a safer air space for Nigeria that will be worthy of emulation by other countries across the globe.

“The safety levels that the global air transport enjoys today represent an achievement built on the determination and efforts of the entire aviation community. Considering the level of commitments made by this current administration to ensure safe airspace for air transport users, the theme of this workshop, ‘Promoting aviation safety in Nigeria’,  is relevant and appropriate.”

Olateru, who was represented by a Director in AIB, Mr Mohammed Wali, said the importance of the association in the aviation industry could not be over-emphasised and urged members to continue to maintain safety standards in their duties.

The Chief Aircraft Maintenance Instructor at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, Dr Kole Uhuegho, said it had become imperative for stakeholders in the industry to observe safety procedures beyond compliance so as to achieve excellence. – Punch
