THE Rivers State Government on Thursday said it was ready for a successful hosting of the All-Africa Badminton Senior Championships (AABSC) in Port Harcourt from April 22 to April 28.

The state’s Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, noted in a statement in Port Harcourt that the expected level of participation shows that the state was unrivalled in sports development.

The competition is a major international scoring event and teams and players from 18 countries have been registered to be a part of the event.

“With the kind of infrastructure investments made by Gov. Nyesom Wike, we are excited about the number of countries involved.

“Rivers State is ready and we are sure this will be the best All-Africa Badminton Senior Championships ever. This is the promise of the Rivers State Government to Africa and we are
committed to keeping this promise,” Iyaye said.

Iyaye added that, as part of preparations for the event, a championships mascot, which was designed by a Port Harcourt resident, would be unveiled in the city soon.

“The mascot will be the fulcrum of all publicity activities in the run-up to the championships,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championships will be held at the Alfred Diete Spiff Civic Centre in Port Harcourt. (NAN)
