ROTARY Club, Bauchi Central, in partnership with Alwadata Lifeline Initiative, donated 150 packs of reuseable sanitary pad to girls in Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Miri in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Monday.
The President of the club, Mr Nwobi Chukwunonso, said that the donation was to promote menstrual hygiene and management among the girls.
He added that the gesture was to ease the girls’ suffering and allow them to stay in school
during their menstrual cycle, and also sensitise the girls on cleanliness during their menstruation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the menstruation, or period, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly circle.
Every month, the woman’s body prepares for pregnancy, and if no pregnancy occurs, the uterus, or womb, sheds its lining.
The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus.
Mrs Winnifred Robinson, the Executive Director of Alwadata Lifeline Initiative, said that the 150 reusable sanitary pads would help to address menstrual poverty among the girls..
Robinson said “the reusable pads are more economical for girls to take care of their menstrual cycle to attend school.
“Good menstrual hygiene empowers women and girls to attend school or businesses to earn a living.
“After using the reusable pad, you wash and spread them under the sun,” she advised.
She also cautioned the girls against sharing the reusable pad, saying it might cause infection.
On his part, Mr Ladan Wunti, the Executive Director, Community Initiative for the Promotion of Health and
Education Sectors (CIPRES), a Non-Government Organisation (NGO), introduced the school pad bank, with a donation of 80 packs of the sanitary towel.
He pledged to support the school to improve on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, and called for boys’ involvement in menstrual hygiene and management through support for girls in school activities.
Mr Mahmud Suleiman, the Vice Principal of GDSS, thanked the Rotary Club and the NGO for the gesture. (NAN)
