NEWLY elected President of the Rotary Club Festac, Benjamin Sawyer, has promised to support the club in a lot of opportunities that would involve more services to humanity.
Sawyer gave the assurance shortly after he was installed as the 9th President of the club by the board.
He highlighted some of his visions for the current Rotary year to include the donation of COVID-19 protection kits, vocational training, access to loans for club members, and empowerment.
Sawyer said it was not a moment of pleasure for him, but of responsibility which had been put on his shoulders to complete within one year.
“Being the president of a club of this nature is like taking a huge responsibility on your shoulders and to be able to succeed in carrying out this responsibility, you need the support of everybody, you can’t be the leader alone,” he said.
Sawyer, who lauded the club’s 2020-2021 theme: “Year of Opportunity,” expressed commitment to members’ development during his tenure.
He also promised to move the club forward by carrying on from where his predecessor stopped.
“I accept this mandate with humility and a deep sense of responsibility, and I thank members of the rotary family club in Festac, Nigeria for the trust and confidence they repose in me.
“It gives me great joy today to be sworn in as the president of this club, and I will like to say a big thank you to the almighty God for today.
“I, therefore, vow to give nothing short of my best in the bid to move the club to higher heights.
“We are all aware that my immediate past president has performed well in executing all projects outlined for the past year, he has indeed left a big shoe to fill,” he said.
Sawyer assured that there would be a lot of opportunities for members to render service to humanity.
“It will be a year of empowerment and the club has donated a car to a club member to kick start the empowerment scheme.
“Also, we will give opportunities to members, the amenity to access a loan of N50,000, which is to be paid back in 5 months.
“We are also going to improve basic education and literacy by organizing quizzes, debates, letter writing competitions among schools, and also honour teachers with the award.
“The work has just begun and I have no doubt in my mind of the enormity of the work that has to be done.
“The level of support I have gotten is a challenge and I want to assure you that I will serve to the best of my ability,” Sawyer said.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business and professional leaders committed to the service to their communities.
It was founded in 1905 and is being represented by over 33,000 clubs. (NAN)
