One Russian national was killed after a tourist boat with 38 people on board sank off Turkey’s Mediterranean coast on Tuesday.

The boat, Baba Selavi, capsized near caves in Alanya, a popular tourist destination, at 11:10 a.m (0810 GMT), the coastguard said in a statement.

There were 33 Russians and five crew members aboard, the Antalya governor’s office said, identifying the fatality as Daniyar Mahitov.

Two coastguard boats and a team of divers were rushed to the site following an emergency call from the vessel.

The boat sank about 50 to 100 metres from the coast, state news agency Anadolu reported. The search-and-rescue operation had ended, the coastguard said.

The cause of the accident was unclear, but an investigation was underway, according to Anadolu. Turkey received more than 7 million Russian tourists in 2019.

Flights between Russia and Turkey resumed in August following a four-month suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic. (dpa/NAN)
