RUSSIA opposition activists have reacted with indignation to President Vladimir Putin’s accusations against his chief critic Alexei Navalny, who was being held in a prison camp.

Putin had defended Navalny’s detention after Wednesday’s summit with U.S. President, Joe Biden, in Geneva.

He said the opposition figure had deliberately ignored reporting requirements to the Russian judiciary last year when he sought treatment in Germany after a poison attack.

“Uh, what? He deliberately flew abroad for treatment to avoid checks? Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, wrote on Twitter.

She posted a photo of the hospital bed on which the dissident, who had fallen into a coma, was transported to Berlin.

Leonid Volkov, who was close to Navalny, accused Putin of losing touch with reality.

The 45-year-old’s wife, Yulia Navalnya, also posted a photo on Instagram of Navalny’s transport to Germany last August.

She ironically remarked that she had kept this photo as a reminder of how her husband had “consciously” flouted Russian laws.

When asked by journalists whether Navalny would be eligible for a prisoner exchange with the US, Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, replied on Thursday this would probably be possible if the opposition member was a U.S. citizen and worked for the intelligence services there. (dpa/NAN)
