THE panelists at the Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference in Lagos have said that gas is not just a transition fuel, but also a destination product with large potential, especially in the areas of electricity generation.

The panelists, who spoke elaborately on the necessity of gas as a transition energy and moderated by Victor Okoronkwo, Group Managing Director of Aiteo, also noted that  Africa has the market, the technology and the innovation necessary to effectively transit to the use of gas as a cleaner energy.

“Africa is concerned about energy transition when our carbon emission is not a threat because it is a global problem and must be fixed by our collective efforts,” said Yan Gari, Gas task force, Garbon,

“We also understand that the transition cannot be done away from fossil fuel.

“However, the pathway that must be chosen should be one that reduces the carbon transmission, while considering the global environmental goals.

“The transition must be fair, we cannot do this by sacrificing countries’ economies.

“Increasing gas production is way to go,” he said.

According to Gari, Nigeria must therefore build its own local market so that its gas resources will remain relevant in the future, and so that we don’t make the same mistakes that we did with fuel.

In his contribution, Sunday Okunbor, commercial manager, ND West, noted that Nigeria has enormous gas reserves that can be monetized to generate revenue for the country.

“Gas is cheaper and lower in Co2 emissions, making it to remain relevant irrespective of the discussions or concerns of carbon emissions.”

Falade stated that there was the need to meet Africa’s large energy demands even as it tries to comply with the net zero target towards reducing carbon emissions.

“There is need to reduce our fossil fuel and also meet our energy demands in a sustainable way.

“The use of Gas will also reduce the deaths associated with carbon emissions and smoke inhalation. We believe the time is now, the time for gas,” he said.

For Odunsi, she disagreed with the argument over the lack of needed technology to pursue the energy transitioning.

According to her, GHGSAT has both the capacity and technology to monitor global emissions through the use of satellites.

However, there is also concerns about attracting investors into gas production. This is because unlike petrol, gas consumption must have a ready market before investors will be ready to put in their monies due to the challenge of storing the product for a long period.

Realnews reports that the panelists comprised Victor Okoronkwo, Group Managing Director, Aiteo, Ed Ubong, managing director, Shell Nigeria Gas, SNG, and president Nigeria Gas Association, Yan Gari, Gas task force, Garbon, Adeleye Falade, General manager, Nigeria LNG Limited, Sunday Okunbor, commercial manager, ND West, Riverson Oppong, Commercial Operations manager, Ghana National Gas Company, Chuka David Eze, managing director,  Frazimex Engineering limited,  OilServ Group, and Lola Odunsi, Director GHGSAT, UK
