THE police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned a 25-year-old sales representative, Sheriffdeen Okediran, for allegedly stealing his employer’s N1.3 million.

Okediran, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing, before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Ikem Uko, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 19 at 10.00a.m. at Means Communication Company at a Shopping Plaza in Morogbo, Lagos.

Uko said that the defendant collected goods worth N1.3 million from the company, sold the goods and failed to remit the money to the company’s account.

He said that the defendant converted the money to his personal use.

Uko said efforts by the company’s management to retrieve the money proved abortive.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravene Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates seven years jail term for stealing from one’s employer.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adekomaiya ordered that the sureties should reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

He added that the sureties should show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

Adekomaiya adjourned the case until Aug. 14 for mention. (NAN)
