THE Nasarawa State Government is to distribute 5,000 refuse bins across the state to improve environmental sanitation.

Mr Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Environmental Officer in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources,  made the disclosure on Saturday in Lafia while briefing newsmen after the monthly sanitation exercise.

Mohammed said the initiative was aimed at ensuring proper disposal of refuse and ensuring cleanliness in the state.

The officer added that the refuse bins would be stationed in strategic locations in all the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

He explained that government was determined to create an enabling environment and facilities to ensure a clean environment.

Speaking on the monthly sanitation, the environmental officer expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by the public.

He attributed the level of compliance to the Ministry’s sensitisation efforts in collaboration with the traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders.

Mohammed commended religious and traditional leaders for constantly mobilising and sensitising their subjects on the need to participate in the exercise.

He said the collaboration had yielded result and it would be sustained in the overall interest of the public.

“Only 11 people were arrested and prosecuted for violating environmental laws in the state in January due to the new strategies of sensitisation’,” he added.

He called on members of the public to always keep their environment clean to guard against outbreak of diseases.

“Residents should cooperate more with the government towards ensuring that the state is clean in their best interest.

“If the environment is kept clean, it will guard against possible outbreak of any disease and  improve the health of the people,’’ he said.
