LAGOS State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerians to harness the differences in culture to build consensus and bond of friendship that will promote the much needed unity in the country.
The governor stated this at the closing ceremony of the 35th National Festival of Arts And Culture (NAFEST), held at the Onikan Stadium, on Sunday.
Sanwo-Olu said this would also reduce tension and tribal conflicts in the country.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, noted that although it was impossible not to have differences considering the multiplicity of culture and languages as Nigerians.
He, however, advised that the path of dialogue and other non-violent approach must be followed in resolving potential issues capable of igniting violence.
The governor commended the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), the organisers of NAFEST, for the concept of carrying children along in the cultural event.
“By so doing, we can sustain, protect and preserve our culture for posterity,” he said.
The governor advised NCAC to continue to engage more children in competitions, introduce them to cultural heritage and sustain the children corner of the festival so that more talents are groomed.
“It is my belief that if we take deliberate steps to put these youths on the right path through positive orientation and meaningful engagements, the rate of youth related crime and violence will gradually reduce and the whole society will be better for it,” he said. (NAN)
