Saudi, Iranian foreign ministers to meet during Ramadan
Foreign
THE Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers have agreed to meet during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, following a deal the two countries reached to resume diplomatic relations after years of tensions.
Saudi Arabia’s Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian, during which they agreed to meet during Ramadan, which began on March 23, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.
It did not specify the date and location of the anticipated meeting, which is the first step in the rapprochement plan reached earlier this month in China.
After the meeting, the two countries should re-open embassies and missions within two months.
Saudi Arabia had severed diplomatic relations with Iran following an attack by Iranian Islamists on the Saudi embassy in Tehran in 2016.
Both countries vie for political and military influence in the region and have faced off in regional proxy conflicts, including in Syria and Yemen.(dpa/NAN)
