Scavenger jailed 8 months for criminal intimidation

AN Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday sentenced a 20-year-old scavenger, Abba Usman to eight months imprisonment for criminal intimidation.

The police charged Usman who resides in forest Kuje, FCT, with criminal intimidation.

The Judge, Sani Umar, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.

Umar in his ruling ordered the convict to pay a fine of N50,000 or in default show serve a jail term of eight months.

He said that if the convict was able to pay the fine, he should enter a bond not to commit such act again.

He said that the reason for the sentence  was that the convict who was under the influence of alcohol might have ended his victim’s life if he has succeeded.

The judge said that if not restricted may end up committing worst offence in future.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that the complainant, Ogalu Elizabeth of Pasali Kuje, Abuja reported the matter at Kuje police station on June 20.

Tanko said that the convict went to the complainant’s shop to buy drink when she refused to sell to him, he brought out a knife to hurt her.

He said that people have to come and rescue her, adding that during police investigation the knife was recovered from him.

He said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 397 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
