SENATE Leader, Ahmad Lawan, said Nigeria’s security agencies require more than one Billion dollars to adequately contain violent crimes across the country.
Lawan said in Damaturu on Wednesday while fielding questions from newsmen that the one Billion Dollar contribution to security from the Excess crude account was timely and patriotic.
He said the agencies needed more resources to improve on the challenges of personnel, arms and other needs of the security to meet emerging challenges.
The leader commended state governors for their sense of patriotism and responsibility for their approval of the fund to fight insecurity in Nigeria.
He allayed fears of those who criticized the contribution assuring them that it would pass through due process.
According to him, the Ministry of Defence will present its expenditure framework to the national assembly for approval.
“The military is over stretched and needs more manpower, arms and additional logistics to effectively fight insecurity in Nigeria,’’ he said.
The lawmaker noted that the country needed one billion dollars annually to beef up its requirements and effectively fight security challenges in the country.
Lawan said the attack on the Dapchi girls’ school was a big lesson for government not to take security of schools especially girls’ schools that were targets of attacks for granted.
The senate leader said that the National Assembly would support President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure rescue of the girls and security of all citizenry.
He commended the president and the Yobe state Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam for sending delegations and visits as a sign of committed leadership.
“The President responded promptly by sending high powered delegation and directed the military to ensure the rescue of the students while, the governor personally visited Dapchi to meet parents,’’ he said. (NAN)
