MAJ.-Gen. Obi Umahi (retired), former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, has urged South-East communities to form vigilant groups to enhance security in the region.
Umahi made the call during a discussion session concerning the Role of Security in the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) at the 3rd South-East Nigeria Economic Summit (SEES) on Wednesday in Enugu.
The summit, which is sponsored by South East Region Economic Development Corporation (SEREDEC), was themed; “South East Nigeria; The Investment Destination.’’
Umahi said that people in the region must get involved in matters of security and ensured they participated actively in it by being security conscious.
“Apart from having a vigilante group in each community in the region, there is a need to have a formidable security network building among the locals from the village heads up to the chairman of the local government.
“Today’s security is everybody’s business and not for government alone or government’s security agencies,’’ he advised.
Contributing, Mr Mike Ejiofor, a former Director of Department of Security Services (DSS), urged the people of the region to question characters that display wealth without viable and clean source of income.
“Our institutions should stop promoting and giving titles to people, who acquire questionable wealth since they are sending negative signals to others,’’ Ejiofor said.
He also urged the people to apply extra vigilance and concern to issues of security, adding that early detection of security threat by the locals could be of much help to everybody including security agencies.
Earlier, the Chairman of SEREDEC and former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, noted that SEREDEC had done much work in promoting Ease of Doing Business (EODB) in the region.
Nnaji said that the condition of doing business in the five states of Enugu State, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo the region had been relaxed and improved.
“The governors have supported by putting more infrastructure in the region and supporting joint regional economic plans.
“With the way we are going, I believe that we will achieve the needed economic growth in the near future if we continue in this line,’’ he said.
