Security, welfare of corps members paramount – Sokoto govt. assures

GOV. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto, on Tuesday promised to prioritise the security and welfare of corps members posted to serve in the state.

He made this known at the opening of orientation exercise for 2024 Batch A stream 2, at Wamakko Permanent Orientation camp, Sokoto State.

The governor, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Aminu Dikko, said: “You know the security challenges in the country now, but I assure you that your security is guaranteed here in Sokoto State.”

Aliyu urged them to imbibe the spirit of discipline, tolerance and understanding to facilitate national cohesion among Nigerians.

He advised them to endeavour to become change agents towards proffering solution to the nation’s lingering challenges.

“Let me seize this opportunity to enjoin you all to be the vanguard of promoting national unity in line with the fundamental objectives of the scheme.

“Try to uphold good morals during your training, interact and integrate freely with the host communities right from the camp,” he advised.

Aliyu observed that the scheme had over the years played a vital role in enhancing national integration, apart from boosting the social, cultural and physical development of the country.

While enjoining the corps members to sustain the tempo for the good of all Nigerians, Aliyu pledged enhanced welfare for those posted to the state.

The Chairperson, NYSC Governing Board and Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Youths, Sport and Social Development, Alhaji Bello Yusuf, urged the corps members to be disciplined, saying, ”if they will win an award it will start right from the camp.

“The local, state and national award is given to an outstanding corps member based on his or her performance during the service period and remember, this is based on merit,” he said.

Yusuf appreciated Gov. Aliyu for the prompt payment of state allowance to the corps members.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yakubu-Yaro, said that camp activities were regimental, while enjoining the corps members to inculcate the spirit of discipline.

Yakubu-Yaro said the combined orientation was directed by the national headquarters, saying that Zamfara NYSC officials also joined the exercise.

The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Sa’idu Sifawa, represented by Justice Sanusi Shehu, sworn-in 1,734 corps members deployed to the two sister states.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corps members comprised 646 males and 614 females for Sokoto while 285 males and 189 females were for Zamfara. (NAN)
