THE Commissioner of Police in Enugu state, Mr Balarabe Suleiman, says the command is committed to check cultism and other social vices in the area.

Suleiman said this at a one-day workshop on “Community-based awareness campaign on cultism and other vices” for Enugu North Senatorial District on Wednesday.

The workshop was organized by the command in collaboration with the Nigerian Policing Programme.

The police boss, who was represented by ACP Oliver Amaechi, said that the police would work in synergy with other security agencies to check the menace.

He warned parents against condoning evil and to be mindful of the kind of company their children and wards were keeping.

He said: “Enugu state is the most peaceful and safest in the country.

“The command has resolved to keep it so and ensure that crime and criminality remain very low.

“The command will use all the resources available for sensitisation and enforcement to curtail the rising wave of cultism in the state.’’

Mr Danny Iwuchukwu, the Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, urged parents to devote time to study and know their children better.

Iwuchukwu said that the quest for economic survival had forced many parents to abandon their fundamental responsibility of child up-bringing in the family.

He said, “Training up a child positively starts from the home, while the child is still in his cradle,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Ezeh, lauded the police for getting deeply involved in the fight against cultism in schools.

Ezeh said that the ministry would leave no stone unturned in its efforts toward eradicating cultism in schools.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer that 200 people attended the workshop. (NAN)
