ANAMBRA State Government has directed that vigilance groups in communities should henceforth take charge of providing security for electricity generating sets and electricity infrastructure installed within their areas.

Don Adinuba, Anambra State commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, told newsmen in Awka on July 11, that the directive has since been passed down to Ikechukwu Aduba, a retired commissioner of Police, and the chairman, Anambra State Vigilance Supervisory Services.

“It is the responsibility of Mr Aduba to ensure that the directive is passed down to all the groups in the various communities in the state.

“There is already an approval from the governor for him to go round the various communities where such facilities have been installed to ensure that the directive will strictly be adhered to.

“He will be expected from tonight to reach out to all towns, where such generators and street light infrastructure have been installed.

“This is because all such infrastructure in localities has been placed under their direct supervision and security. Government will not tolerate any theft of these items.’’

According to Adinuba, the vigilance groups will be held responsible in case of theft or vandalism of such government property.

He said that the governor also enjoined the police to thoroughly investigate a recent theft of a generator on one of the communities.

“They should henceforth ensure regular and more proactive monitoring of communities by embarking on night time and early morning patrols in order to nip in the bud all such crimes,’’ Adinuba said.
