THE U.S. military said Tuesday its special forces killed on militant in an airstrike against al-Shabab terrorists in southern Somalia.

The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) which oversees American troops on the African continent said the latest strike was conducted in cooperation with Somali government in the vicinity of Kunyo Barrow.

William Gayler, Africom director of operations, said that the strike was an example of the pressure placed on terrorist networks, including the al-Qaida aligned al-Shabaab.

“This persistent pressure limits the terrorists’ freedom of movement, creates confusion within the network, and supports our Somali partners as they continue to take the fight to al-Shabaab,’’ he added.

Africom, which has in the past conducted counter-terrorism airstrikes against the terror group in Somalia said no civilians were injured or killed as a result of the latest airstrike.

NAN reports that Africom is responsible for U.S. military operations, including fighting regional conflicts and maintaining military relations with 53 African nations.

Its area of responsibility covers all of Africa except Egypt.(Xinhua/NAN)
