SEN. Diket Plang (APC/Plateau Central), says he has sponsored a bill for the establishment of University of Mines and Geosciences to be situated in Plateau.

Plang disclosed this on Monday in Jos while interacting with newsmen on his stewardship in the National Assembly.

“The bill has already passed second reading and will pass third reading when the Senate resumes from recess,” Plang said.

The senator said he had a duty to ensure that the bill was passed and signed into law as it would have an overwhelming impact on the country’s economy.

“The bill seeks to upgrade the School of Mining and Geosciences to the Nigerian University of Mines and Geosciences.

“This bill is an economic bill and a developmental bill because it will help to deepen the knowledge of Nigeria and Nigerians in geology, mineral resources, and mineral development.

“We have the University of Petroleum, because we have petrol; we have Marine University because we have waterways.

“We have the University of Agriculture because we have land for agriculture, but we do not have the University of Mineralogy when we are blessed in terms of minerals.

“By the time this university is established, I believe that it will deepen our knowledge in exploration, exploitation and mineral technology,’’ he said.

Plang solicited the support and cooperation of his colleagues for the passage of the bill and the eventual establishment of the University of Minerology. (NAN)
