THE Compact with all Nigerians (SERVICOM) has called on Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), to put in  more efforts to ensure Nigeria’s achievement in Global Professional Certified Teachers in the country.

Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, the National Coordinator of SERVICOM, made the call when she presented the Compliance Evaluation (SCE) report of TRCN’s offices in19 states, to the council’s registrar/management on Monday at the agency’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the SCE routine report is part of SERVICOM’s mandates to carry out independent surveys on quality of services of MDAs to ensure citizens-focus service delivery among MDAs..

The exercise is to identify gaps in service delivery and to make recommendations by the SERVICOM to improve customers’ satisfaction and accountability.

While rating the TRCN, Akajemeli said it had greatly improved in its services in terms of licencing, professionalism among others, but needed more efforts to improve on identified gaps by SERVICOM compliance reports.

“TRCN has improved, however, there are still areas to be covered in terms of the timelines and the promised timeliness as to certification process.

” So, we need to do more, more efforts in driving towards the aspiration of global professional certified teachers.

“You can even see from the little efforts and from the improvement recorded so far, Nigeria’s teachers registration certificate is now acceptable globally.

“And just currently trending, British government is officially requesting teachers from Nigeria with certificates and licences to come over to the UK;, that is a very good development and highly commendable”

She, however, explained that some of the teachers at the rural areas were not on the same page with the teachers in the urban areas, hence a lot needed to be done around enlightenment and guidance towards the review of the certification process.

The SERVICOM boss identified other weakness to include “lack of proper monitoring system of schools in the local areas, delay in the issuance of certificates which ought to be issued within 10 working days but takes up to two months to process.”

Others are; low awareness level of the need for professionalism in teaching, especially in the rural areas as complained by some of the teachers and partners that interacted with by the SERVICOM SCE team.

She advised the TRCN to put in place a system to monitor the waiting time standards of accessing every service rendered in terms of how long it takes before licences and certificates are produced to reduce unnecessary delay.

She, however, lauded the TRCN’s management in Benue n particular, for its collaboration with Nigerian Teacher’s Institute (NTI), State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), the State Teacher’s Board, for licencing of teachers with a data base of registered teachers in the state.

According to her, this has made it possible for TRCN to ascertain the number of registered professional teachers in order to encourage teacher’s registration in the state.

Responding, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar TRCN commended SERVICOM for its reports, but however, called for the review of some of its observations in the report.

Ajiboye explained that the council had in recent times improved tremendously in its services in terms of conducting examinations and monitoring of teachers” activities.

“We conduct exams nationally and the results will come out within two weeks. People outside Nigeria are even looking up to us because of our services. (NAN)
