Several people injured in prison fire in southern Germany

SEVERAL people suffered minor injuries after a fire broke out at a prison in the southern German town of Memmingen on Thursday.
A police spokesman said that a prison employee first noticed smoke coming from a cell.
Prison officers quickly managed to extinguish the fire and remove the inmate from the room.
However, the 27-year-old and another prisoner suffered from the effects of smoke inhalation.
The spokesman said that a dozen of the officers deployed to contain the incident were also affected by the fumes.
He said some of the affected persons went to the hospital, but no one suffered serious injuries.
The prison did not need to be evacuated.
Police say they assume the inmate deliberately started the fire in the cell. (dpa/NAN)
