Shehu of Borno’s Brother Dies in Inferno at University of Lagos

UMAR Abubakar Garbai, brother of Abubakar-El-Kanemi, Shehu of Borno, has died in an early morning fire that razed down four guest rooms at the University of Lagos, UNILAG. Garbai was part of the delegation from Borno State, who came for the Convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, who were lodged at the university guest house. Three others reportedly suffered varying degrees of injuries.

The fire incident which began at 2am on Thursday, caught the delegation unawares since they were deep in sleep.

Before the arrival of the fire service, three other guest rooms had been gutted by fire before the flames were finally put out.

Suleiman Yakubu, South-west Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, who confirmed the incident, said although four guest rooms were involved, only one of the occupants died.

Speaking through the zonal Spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, coordinator said the deceased died of suffocation. “There was a fire outbreak involving members of delegation of Shehu of Borno at UNILAG. The incident happened at the Shehu of Borno guest house in UNILAG and one person died of suffocation.

The body of the deceased will be flown to Maiduguri for burial today.  (New Mail)
