SHOWMAX, an African streaming service, says it has secured exclusive rights to stream the highly anticipated Nigerian superhero animation, “Iyanu”, by Lion Forge Entertainment across the continent in 2025.
This was disclosed in a statement by Showmax on Tuesday in Lagos.
“The series will be available on Showmax in 44 African countries and on Cartoon Network and Max in the U.S.”
Iyanu is an adaptation of the graphic novel series, Iyanu: Child of Wonder, by Nigerian creator and producer, Roye Okupe.
The animated series follows the journey of an orphan who must uncover the mystery behind her newfound power to save her people from an ancient curse.
Set in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland, “Iyanu” boasts an all-African voice cast, led by award-winner Serah Johnson as Iyanu, alongside Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Stella Damasus, Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello.
David Steward, Founder and CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment, said: “We are thrilled to bring ‘Iyanu’ to audiences across Africa and the world.
“Iyanu is a series that plays to young audiences everywhere in the world, but its heart and roots are in Africa, where it was conceptualised.
“This is why we’re so proud to announce a deal with Showmax to stream Iyanu in 44 countries throughout Africa.
“We envision African children being inspired by Iyanu – and a superhero world shaped around their own,” he said.
According to him, the series is a testament to the power of African storytelling and its ability to inspire and captivate audiences of all ages.
“Iyanu is a groundbreaking series that showcases African culture, talent, and creativity.
“With its rich animation, engaging storyline, and positive representation, it is poised to become a global phenomenon,” he said.
Also, Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, said: “We are excited that African animation is gaining recognition and captivating audiences both locally and internationally.
“Animation is fast becoming a popular genre for our audiences as it cuts across age divides and is enjoyed by the whole family.
“As the largest producers of African content globally, MultiChoice is proud to bring this remarkable story of Iyanu.
“This weaves the magic of our Nigerian culture with great entertainment to our customers on Showmax across Africa,” she said.
