Sierra Leone election tilting towards run-off as Madmada Bio leads with over 1m votes

BASED on 60% provisional results released on Monday, June 26 by the Electoral Commission, Madmada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party, SLPP is leading with 1,067,666 votes, followed by his closest rival opposition candidate, Samura Kamara, of the All Peoples Congress, APC, who has 793,751 votes.

Going by the country’s constitutional provisions, although Julius Madmada Bio, the country’s sitting President is leading, the two frontrunners will go into a run-off vote two weeks after the official release of the first round results if no candidate gets the mandatory 55% in the first round,.

Part of the report reads:

“In exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 33 and 38A (as amended) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991) and pursuant to Sections 7 and 68 (1) of the Public Elections Act, 2022 (Act No.17 of 2022), the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, ECSL, conducted the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Council Elections simultaneously in Sierra Leone on the 24th of June 2023.

“By the powers conferred on me as the National Returning Officer, I hereby release partial presidential election results for Presidential election conducted on June 24, 2023. These results represent 60 percent of total polling stations results processed each district, cleared by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, ECSL, Result Management systems at Regional Tally Centres in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Port Loko.

“The results detailed below are partial and do not represent the complete outcome of the Presidential election,” it said.

 BIO Julius Maada – Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) – 1,067,666 votes.

KAMARA Samura Matthew Wilson – All Peoples Congress, APC, – 793,751 votes.

BAH Mohamed Chernoh – National Democratic Alliance, NDA – 14,829 votes.

MARGAI  Charles Francis  – Peoples Movement for Democratic Change, PMDC – 9,621 votes.

KAMARA Nabieu Musa – Peace and Liberation Party (PLP) – 5,149 votes

SACCOH Abdulal  Dougakoro  – Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP) – 4780 votes

COKER Prince – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – 4,136 votes

 KAKAY Iye, Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) – 3094 votes.

KABUTA Saa Henry –  United National Peoples Party (UNPP) – 2,865 votes

WILLIAMS Beresford Victor –  Republic National Independent Party (RENIP) – 1,807 votes.

JONJO Mohamed – Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) – 1,663 votes.

SOWA-TURAY Mohamed – United Democratic Movement (UDP) – 1,099 votes.

SANDY Jonathan Patrick – National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP) – 943 votes.
