INSTRUCTORS at Skills and Vocational centre, Ozalla Anaku have called on youths undergoing training in the centre to avail themselves of opportunities of training to improve on their skills.
The Skills Acquisition and Vocational Centre, Anaku, a CAFE pet project was inaugurated in 2017 by Ebelechukwu Obiano, wife of the governor.
Onochie Obidike, a computer instructor at the centre said in an interview that there was need for young people being trained for one vocation or the other to open up their minds to it.
He said that a lack of skill had rendered some youths unproductive and left some graduates unemployable.
“Acquiring skill is a solution to unemployment and at the same time an opening for better employment opportunity.
“So, anyone who has an opportunity to be trained especially by government should be walking with his or her shoulders high.’’
Obidike applauded Governor Willie Obiano’s plan to build more skills acquisition centres in the state, while pleading for assistance in the area of improved electricity supplies.
“I commend Obiano’s plan to set up more skills acquisition centres in the state but I want him to know that our major challenge is a lack of electricity supply.
“We need electricity to power the computers purchased for us. I will want us to be connected to the national grid or be provided grants for fuelling our electricity generating sets,’’ Obidike said.
However, Mary Anyanwumelu, head Sewing Unit, said: “any young person without skills in this era is doomed forever.
“Gone are the days when women wait for their husbands for their every need.
“I encourage everyone to learn a skill because it is the antidote to a lack of employment.’’
In vulcanising Unit, Joseph Onuorah, the teacher, noted that it was regrettable that of 22 trainees in his class, only eight showed seriousness in their learning process.
According to Onuorah, skill acquisition helps to arrest youth restlessness and anyone who has an opportunity to learn a skill should not abuse it.
He added that Obiano wanted every youth in Anambra to be productive members of the society.
